Joe’s Beerhouse was started by Joe Gross, a German master chef who immigrated to Namibia in 1986 to open a fine-dining restaurant with a partner. After three years his partner decided to return to Germany and the Kaiserkrone Restaurant was sold. The sale allowed Joe to develop his idea to create a small, cosy pub, which offered its patrons a relaxed spot to have a drink and enjoy a light meal. He opened the first Joe’s Beerhouse in 1990 in Grimm Street. Joe realised after two years he had to relocate to bigger premises due to the popularity of the Beerhouse, and so the furnishings and essence of the Beerhouse moved to Independence Avenue.
Decorated in an African theme and filled with imaginative and novel memorabilia Joe’s Beerhouse became a regular meeting place for Namibians and tourists alike. Joe recognised the gap in the market for well priced, good food, with generous portions and mouth-watering flavours. With his extensive knowledge and experience in the industry Joe began to add uniquely African and German dishes to the ever growing menu.
Once again after six years the popularity of his now world-famous Beerhouse exceeded his wildest expectations and he decided to relocate the Beerhouse to an even bigger property. In 2000 Joe’s Beerhouse moved to its vast, current location, 160 Nelson Mandela Avenue. This venue boasts three thatched bar areas with quirky toilet seats as barstools, a thatched Lapa, a beer garden, a well stocked wine cellar and an open-air wooden Boma with a cosy fireplace for the winter months.
In 2007, Joe and his wife Anette introduced a unique shareholder policy and converted Joe’s Beerhouse into a private company. With this transformation they plan to expand and franchise Joe’s Beerhouse as a restaurant concept throughout Namibia and into South Africa.
Today, Joe’s Beerhouse is a thriving business recognised for its good food, superb company, unique ambience, and is locally and internationally known as a must-see Namibian attraction. So come see for yourself and get lost in your surroundings as you dine on delectable Zebra Steak, tasty Bushman Sosati (Kebab), or any of the other dishes available on the renowned menu.
